Phrygian Mode Piano Scales
The Phrygian mode is the third mode of the major scale, built by starting on the third degree. It follows the interval pattern: half, whole, whole, whole, half, whole, whole (H-W-W-W-H-W-W), or 1-2-2-2-1-2-2 in semitones. Distinguished by its lowered second degree (half step above the root), Phrygian has a dark, exotic, and somewhat Spanish or Middle Eastern character. This distinctive half-step interval creates tension and gives the mode its mysterious, dramatic quality. The Phrygian mode is commonly used in flamenco music, heavy metal, and film scores to evoke tension or exoticism. Its unique sound makes it a powerful tool for composers and improvisers seeking darker, more intense harmonic colors.
