Harmonic Minor Piano Scales

The harmonic minor scale is a variation of the natural minor scale with a raised seventh degree, creating a distinctive augmented second interval between the sixth and seventh notes. This scale follows the interval pattern: whole, half, whole, whole, half, augmented second, half (W-H-W-W-H-W½-H), or 2-1-2-2-1-3-1 in semitones. The raised seventh creates a strong leading tone that pulls toward the tonic, making it ideal for harmonic progressions in minor keys. This characteristic interval gives the harmonic minor its exotic, dramatic sound, frequently used in classical music, film scores, and various world music traditions.
