Locrian Mode Piano Chords

The Locrian mode is the seventh and most dissonant mode of the major scale, built by starting on the seventh degree. It follows the interval pattern: half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole (H-W-W-H-W-W-W), or 1-2-2-1-2-2-2 in semitones. Characterized by its lowered second and fifth degrees, Locrian features a diminished fifth above the root, creating an unstable, tense, and dark character. This diminished triad makes it the most theoretically unstable mode, rarely used for extended passages but valuable for creating tension and dissonance. While uncommon in traditional music, Locrian finds applications in jazz, metal, and experimental music for its unique unsettling quality and its relationship to half-diminished chords.
